Bead & Chain Jewelry

“Stringing beads through chain on head pins or beading wire offers almost unlimited effects.”

“Chain can be a bead jewelrymaker’s best friend. It’s great for suspending earrings or necklace dangles so they have a lot of fluidity and motion. It lends shape and form to some pieces and serves as an accent for others. Stringing beads through chain on head pins or beading wire offers almost unlimited effects. It’s easy to link a few beads with chain to make beautiful, classic jewelry quickly. And simply changing the kinds of beads you choose for the same classic design will result in styles that range from vintage to contemporary.

Most bead stores and many catalogs carry a wide assortment of chains sold by the foot or inch. Several of the projects in this booklet use a fine-gauge open-link chain called cable chain. This workhorse of the chain family comes in many gauges. Revise the directions that call for 2.2mm cable chain to use heavier chain and larger beads, and you’ll have bold jewelry that makes a strong statement. Scale down your chain and beads for more delicate looks. Or use larger beads with fine chain so that the chain almost disappears and the beads look as though they’re floating.

In the first of the many fun projects in this booklet, you’ll learn to make your own chain by winding wire around a dowel and cutting it into rings that you then join together. This project demonstrates some of the different effects possible with simple changes to the size and order of the links. It should suggest a million ideas for your own designs. Be creative and have fun!”
