alicesmallBead Artists Against Breast Cancer Silent Auction
by Alice Korach

On the front page of The Bead Bugle, you’ll see two links for the Breast Cancer Silent Auction. This auction, in its fifth year, has been a labor of love for Tonette, the Bead Babe, Playle’s who has hosted it every year, me, and Lora G at Bead&Button. This year will be the most successful yet.

1171-92smallEvery year, the auction has started at the Bead&Button Show with daily silent auctions, raffle bead strands, and other events. The auction then continues on-line managed by BeadBabe, hosted by Playle’s auction
site, and billed by Lora at Bead&Button. Contributions come in throughout the year from glass beadmakers, beaders and suppliers from many countries. Without the generous donations of so many and the active participation of show attendees and you, we would not have succeeded in raising the funds we have for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

So many charities support breast cancer research, but we chose to donate to the National Breast Cancer Foundation because it addresses the current problem of people dying NOW because they can’t afford to be tested early and often don’t even know that they should be tested. The National Breast Cancer Foundation promotes education and subsidizes mammograms for poor women, who would not otherwise be able to be tested.

featured Item week 1We owe this year’s success in great part to the generous contributions of the borosilicate glassworkers who participated in a flamework demonstration organized by KB Glassworks of Albuquerque, NM, and sponsored by Ring of Fire Glassworks in Milwaukee, WI, during the 2004 Bead&Button Sho. They donated all the pieces produced there (as well as in their own studios) to our first live auction, which raised almost $12,000!

In addition, so many wonderful pieces were donated by vendors and artists at the show that we were unable to offer all of them in the show’s silent auctions. That means that YOU have a chance to win great beads, jewelry, and other items in the on-line auction, which is going on right now! Click on the link below

or on either of the pink ribbons on the front page of the Bead Bugle to go to the auction and see the beautiful items currently up for bid. Some fabulous things are going for incredibly cheap prices!1177-102 small

If you’ve previously registered for the on-line auction and none of your information has changed, you can bid immediately. If you’re a new bidder or you need to change your email address or password, click on the item you’re interested in and go to the bottom of the screen. Follow the prompts to Playle’s to register or change your information. Then go back to the item and bid.

Each week, new pieces go up, so visit often and bid often. Every cent raised (100%) goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, so besides winning great beads, you may just save someone’s life. It doesn’t get any better than that.
