Sometimes you just have to buy those beads that you love!

Beginner LevelI’ve coveted the focal beads in this necklace for several years now. Each year at one of my local bead shows, The Rocky Mountain Bead Society’s Bead Bazaar, I’d caress them. I’d drool on them, and then I’d do the math and decide that I just couldn’t afford them. But this year, the artist, Susan Simonds (www.susansimonds.com) was having a “Recession Sale.” All her lampwork beads were half off. I decided it was now or never and I snapped them up!

About The Author

Lynn Dean (The Purple Lady) is a freelance writer and jewelry artist living in Northern Colorado. She has taught beadworking classes for years and her jewelry has been featured in numerous art galleries.

If you would like Lynn to feature your lampwork beads in her work for this column, you may send them to her at P.O. Box 146, Timnath, CO 80547. If your beads sing to her, she will create a piece of jewelry and then, at your discretion return it to you, for a small fee, to use as a sample; donate the jewelry created to benefit a non-profit in Northern Colorado; or, if the beads are purple, wear the jewelry and advertise your work. If the beads don’t sing to her, she will return them to you.

Beading Tips From Our Readers

Problem: The thinnest elastic commonly available is .5 mm thick. Way too thick for needles thin enough for delicas etc. No way to use delicas or #11 seed beads to make an elastic bracelet?

Solution: With your thumbnail, press the elastic about 2 cm (.8”) from its end to the bar below the blade of a wet razor. Pull it against the blade with the other hand to lengthwise shave half or more of this short end away. After the end reached the thumbnail, the last 2 mm or so of the elastic will have its normal thickness. Cut that part away. With a bit of luck, the last cm or so of the elastic will be thin enough to be threaded into the needle, and far enough out to be grasped. The 'native' thread can then be pulled into the needle, unless too much was shaved off the end.

Happy beading!
