“An innate understanding of the painterly and emotional nature of beads allows Chatt to manipulate his materials”
David Chatt: Two Hands, Twenty Years and a Billion Beads is the first in a series of monographs published by Bellevue Arts Museum, which introduce leading figures of the contemporary American craft movement. This catalogue and the exhibition of the same title it accompanies document the remarkable richness and diversity of Seattle-based David Chatt’s achievements.
American audiences have been familiar with Chatt’s jewelry and vessel bead works since the early 1990’s. It is, however, in his whimsical pieces, created since 1998, that Chatt has moved his innovative technical skills and design concepts to a new sculptural horizon . An innate understanding of the painterly and emotional nature of beads allows Chatt to manipulate his materials in order to create dynamic and tactile forms that embody both the artist’s seduction by and the seductive allure of the bead medium. The works presented here reflect playful and serious, tactile and precious, autobiography and social commentary.
This publication and exhibition, which encompass Chatt’s career as a practicing artist for the past twenty years, offer the first comprehensive presentation of the artist’s oeuvre.
