Once again there are more romantic variations in forming various clasps and links, all of which incorporate small beads in the finished piece” very Victorianin presentation and suspiciously addictive in the twisting `n twining of metal wire.
“Fiber-Wire Beads & Jewelry” by Lisa Vann takes the reader through making 59 bead and jewelry creations, which are based on a simple fiber-wire combination she terms “wiber.” She provides lists of supplies, terminology and a number of simple winding and finishing techniques to build from. Projects include a sterling cuff bracelet, threebead necklace, spiral earrings, tear drop necklace, ethnic necklace with matching bracelets, crocheted “wiber” braid neckpiece and black and sterling ball chain necklace.
The first chapters of the book start the reader with details regarding supplies and basic techniques. Many of the supplies are pictured and the techniques nicely photographed in stages of steps. The types of projects will teach the reader to make twisted fiber-wire and simple wound, glued and “trapped” beads and jewelry. Also, the reader will learn to crochet with fiber and wire and to combine the techniques and hybrid variations.
Each technique is well explained, and the detailed staging photographs by photographer Mark Goros, are wonderfully done in full color. Vann credits designer and beadwork historian, Lydia Borin; fiber artist, Linda Hendrickson; enameling artist Susan J. Lewis; polymer clay artist Susan Berkowitz; and bead and jewelry designer, Mishi Campbell; knitter, Suzanne Pineauwith much of the inspiration behind her work and her book.
The book concludes with 18 photographs in dazzling color of finished pieces by the assorted artists that Vann credits with assistance and inspiration. Vann is a metal-smith with an extensive background in textile/surface design, abstract painting and interior design. This is her second book.
