This month’s chain mail weave is called Flat Mesh, more formally referred to as European 4-in-1. Flat mesh was the basic weave used to make armor and jewelry in Europe in the Middle Ages. Since you can increase and decrease at the edges, you can build shapes. Thus flat mesh was used to shape body coverings. The mesh drapes very much like a flexible fabric. The rings are like scales that expand and contract as they move.

There are several different strategies for creating this weave, as you’ll see if you do some exploration on the web and in books and magazines. I have chosen what I think is the easiest one to understand, though it is not necessarily the speediest to work.

Gardiner150About The Designer

I have a passion for beads and for creating jewellery. This is my new lease on a life—I am also a retired teacher, school board computer consultant, and past partner in a graphic design company.

Most of my beading and chainmail skills are self-taught using information from books, the internet, and trial and error. I learn from my fellow beaders at the Toronto Bead Society, and the Grand River Bead Society, as well as at the annual Texas Beaders’ Retreat in Temple, TX. I love to travel to take classes from recognized experts (and to visit bead stores of course).
